WordPress essentials

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS).

A CMS is a software that let’s you create edit, organise, and publish content on the internet.

WordPress allows you to have full control over the files, documents, as well as the design and display of your content.
You don’t have to know code to use WordPress which is one of the biggest reasons so many people choose WordPress for their websites.

WordPress is free. You can download, install, use and modify this software as you please. It’s open source which means the source code is available to anyone.

There is a large WordPress community on the web who help each other out with issues and there’s plenty of free plugins to enhance the features of your website and free and paid themes to use.

Why choose WordPress?

WordPress is extremely versatile and you can make virtually any kind of website or blog with it. With plugins you can make your site do basically anything you want. WordPress is used by many various large companies around the world for their websites but you don’t need to know code or be a tech expert to set up your own site.

WordPress is great for beginners. You can get into it as much or as little as you want. You can choose a theme and just add your own details, pages and posts, or you can customize every little detail.

If you choose a quality theme, like any of the themes from StudioPress,  you can be sure it’s mobile friendly and well coded. Go through the guide for the theme on how to set it up like the demo.

There are a few plugins that are basically a must, such as Akismet for spam comments, and Yoast SEO. Yoast SEO is a great tool to use for your articles or blog posts, as it tells you how you’re doing with regards to SEO in that particular post. It also recommends what you can do to improve your SEO and is basically your built in SEO buddy.

But there are lots of other platforms and systems?

You are absolutely right, there is a plethora of ways to DIY your website nowadays. It really depends on the level of involvement you want to have with the backend of your site, the functions you want it to have, and what your level of tech interest is.

There are options for WordPress using a drag and drop editor making it very user friendly and more like the DIY options out there like Squarespace or Wix, and you still get all the great features of WordPress.

It is one of the things I love about WordPress, that it isn’t tied to one hosting provider or company. You can choose to move your site whenever you want if you’re not happy with your current provider, change your theme doesn’t have to cost very much at all, and there are always people working on new plugins and exciting ways of customizing WordPress.
